BREAKING: Austrian Far Right Narrowly Loses Presidential Elections

We are thrilled to hear that Alexander Van der Bellen has been elected as the next President of Austria. After a swing of 750,000 votes, Mr Van der Bellen successfully prevented Norbert Hofer (FPÖ) from becoming the first first far-right head of state in the EU.

Whilst the news of this gives us great confidence in the judgement of the Austrian, European, people to vote for a fairer, more equal society, we are at the same time deeply concerned that there still remains a large number of people (49%) who chose to vote against the very ideologies the EU was built to fight against.

These tendencies have been visible in France, Germany, Hungary, Poland and beyond and should concern every democratic European.

Thank you to everyone who voted and prevented this day from being marked as a day of shame.

Today we celebrate a day of victory!
