RESOLUTION – United in Diversity of Jewish Denominational Practices

EUJS notes that:

1. The Jewish community is diverse, consisting of individuals from different ethnocultural, geographical, and religious observance backgrounds, each with unique experiences and perspectives.

2. Differences in religious observances may occasionally and involuntarily lead to circumstances where individuals feel uncomfortable encountering practices different from what they are accustomed to.

EUJS believes that:

1. As a pluralistic and inclusive organisation, EUJS upholds every member’s right to freely express their Jewish identity while respecting the values of others and the organisation.

2. Respecting, supporting and accommodating every Jewish student’s beliefs, no matter their level of religious observance or denomination, is of the utmost importance and represents the core value of inclusivity at EUJS.

3. EUJS should continue to commit to the value of and dedication to diversity of denominational practice (cross-communalism) for all their programmes and events to ensure they are as welcoming as possible to as many Jewish students from across Europe.

4. Recognising and embracing our different Jewish practices and experiences strengthens the organisation’s ability to advocate for the rights and interests of all Jewish students.

EUJS resolves to:

  1. Advocate for the respect of the religious rights of Jewish students both within and outside Jewish community spaces;
  2. Ensure that Shabbat, Festivals, Fast Days and other observance dates are taken into consideration when scheduling programmes, and travel to and from them is not required to take place during an observance. This includes that programming taking place on a shabbat/festival has appropriate accommodations in place ahead of time as a preliminary standard in order to promote the highest level of inclusivity and conform to the highest level of observance present, for all whenever possible, and always for those wishing to practice.
  3. Inform Union leaders when choosing dates for EUJS events that coincide with Jewish celebrations or observances.
  4. Ensure there is a diverse offering of denominational services wherever logistically feasible and desired by individuals, as well as allocating time during programming for those who wish to pray each service.
  5. Ensure that all EUJS programmes provide adequate catering options for those who request kosher-certified food, while not compromising on their full participation in said programme.
  6. Ensure that common religious practices in EUJS spaces (like Kiddush and Havdalah) are inclusive to all the levels of religious observance of EUJS members.
  7. Explore alternative solutions to electronic keys and other electronic devices for participants observing Shabbat and Jewish holidays.
  8. Respect the various intricacies of observances not mentioned above and to commit to providing a space where each individual can practice their Judaism according to their own stringency of beliefs, wishes and religious interpretations.
  9. Provide the opportunity to give feedback on religious accommodation and areas for improvement on event feedback forms.
